The work of director Emir Kusturica, whose earlier film Underground had been a major artistic success, was poised to be the star of the Bosnian film scene in the early 1990s. Like his previous film, Black Cat, White Cat was a critical and popular success. The film also won the Golden Leopard at the 1993 Locarno International Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 1994, where it was viewed as a strong contender. However, the film was banned by the Bosnian Serb government in 1994, ostensibly for its perceived nationalist overtones. In 1996, the film was restored and shown in the film festival circuit, but was not seen publicly again until 2001 when the Museum of Modern Art in New York City exhibited a limited showing of the restored print. In 2005, it was shown at the British Film Institute in London, United Kingdom. In 2008, the film was released on DVD by the Criterion Collection. The film recently was screened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, New York, the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo and the Museum of Modern Art in Belgrade, Serbia. The film is available in a new DVD edition in 2017, with a new two-hour making of documentary film by Emir Kusturica, Black Cat, White Cat Uncut. This new edition was released on November 30, 2017 in the US. The film is also available on Netflix and other streaming services.
