"Companies that sell medical imaging technology, including Siemens, GE, Philips and Toshiba, have agreed to change the colors of the device screens used inside their medical equipment to indicate when a patient is being exposed to potentially harmful doses of radiation of more than 20 millisieverts, with the exact level to be determined but believed to be in the 30 millisievert range, according to a joint statement issued on Tuesday by MITA members."
"The changes are to alert physicians and patients to the risks of radiation and are being introduced to ensure that medical device manufacturers meet regulatory requirements for warning patients in the event that they are being exposed to doses of radiation to which they should not be exposed," according to the statement from MITA.
Under the proposed policy, devices "will have a color code that will alert patients in the event that they are being exposed to radiation levels of more than 20 millisieverts, with the exact level to be determined but believed to be in the 30 millisievert range."
"To help patients and medical professionals understand the dangers of being exposed to too much radiation, MITA recommends that patients in the event of an exposure of 20 millisieverts or more should be informed immediately. Because of the uncertainties in these measurements, MITA is working on recommendations for when physicians, hospitals, and patients need to know when patients are exposed to more than 20 millisieverts," according to the MITA statement.
According to MITA: "For example, in a case in which exposing a patient to 10 millisieverts of radiation is acceptable, the color red can be used to alert doctors and patients that the patient has been exposed to 5 millisieverts of radiation, which is considered acceptable.
