The Man From Nowhere is an Indonesian psychological thriller film directed by Joko Anwar, and produced by Sunil Samtani, Isyak Rahayu and Eric Lodal. The film stars Aisya Damayanti, Alexander Etua and Macan Rakhmat.[1]
The film centers on a Chinese-Indonesian woman, Yati (Aisya Damayanti), who is being held captive by a man named Aidana (Alexander Etua), a serial killer. Yati is unable to escape and is subsequently killed by Aidana, who then proceeds to continue killing other women in an attempt to catch himself a real-life hero.[1] Aisya Damayanti plays the role of Yati, a beautiful and vivacious young woman who is never married and has an unusual relationship with her father.
Jakarta-based production manager Moen Moenartono was hired to assist with the film's post-production. According to the director, many of his ideas for the film were inspired by the Bangkok set of Pengabdi Setan.[7][9][16]
Other actors cast for the film included Anwar regulars Shamim Ara and Marcello Mastroianni, while actor Ramli Chalid was cast in the role of Khan's best friend, after previously playing a similar role in the director's Rumah Dara.[9][16]
He also added that everything in the film was designed by the production designer, including the streets, buildings, and cars. The film's production designer Rajat Fantini also worked on the film Pegawai Jalanan (2008), while the film's production designer Ine Yehudit previously worked on the film Aku Cinta (2007).[9][10][11]
Anwar had also wanted to make a remake of the film Maafkan Aku after watching the 2002 animated film, which would have been his first remake. However, the film was not greenlit until 2011 after the release of his film The Man From Nowhere.[5][10][11]
