As Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver begins, Raziel has regained his human form, but has lost his reason due to his rage and regret. In the first few hours of the game, he is shown on a journey to kill Kain, encountering various human characters and recounting his past to them. Raziel's story is told in reverse, back to the time of the original Soul Reaver game. In the game's opening scene, Raziel confronts Kain, who pledges not to kill Raziel, and instead to grant him the opportunity to slay the vampire who beheaded him. Raziel initially resists, but ultimately agrees, for he decides that if this is his destiny, then it is better to embrace it. Raziel does so, and is informed by the Elder God that he will gain a new body.

Raziel's quest for revenge is set in motion when he witnesses an execution of two female vampires who are intended as sacrifices to the Elder God: a pregnant woman and an innocent child. Raziel is enraged at the sight, and as he attempts to flee the precipitous execution site, Kain attacks him, and although he is beheaded, Raziel is resurrected by the Elder God. Raziel's story takes place after the events of the first game, therefore the Soul Reaver is accompanied by Raziel's sword, Soul Reaver, which the Elder God has placed at his disposal.

Although Kain does not comment on the fact that he is being resurrected, he is plainly upset by this turn of events, and leaves Raziel to his fate. However, Raziel is saved by a young woman who has witnessed the events, and returns with her to the castle where Kain used to live. Raziel tells the young woman about his past, and explains that he cannot change his destiny, and now he will only be able to kill vampires, from which she learns that vampires are corrupting the human race. She agrees to help Raziel, but when he asks her to help him find the Elder God, she refuses, as she is leaving the castle and traveling to the land of the Sotha Sil, where she wishes to find her brother.

The first two chapters of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver continue the story of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, in which Kain is the primary protagonist. Chapter one is set 1500 years before the events of Blood Omen, and chapter two takes place six years after the events of 827ec27edc
