The art of varma kalai is very ancient. Even though applied mainly for the benefit of women, the practice has been and continues to be practiced by various sections of Tamil society including Hindu Brahmin families. In ancient times the loups were the only teachers of this science, and their schools continued till the advent of the British in India, the last hundred years. It is widely believed in the rest of India that women were the last to learn and practice this varma rated art, and for nearly two thousand years the men of the country have practiced it. Not until the present century have women dared to practice the art and to teach it. No one can be absolutely certain as to its origin. The earliest records of it go back about three thousand years, and the first schools were established in the Satavahana period. Our knowledge of present-day vartma kalai comes entirely from what is called the Vanamamasi or family medical book. Its author was Kambilasan, a native of Kanyakumari District who is said to have lived during the Chola period. He wrote the book in three instalments and gave it for teaching to his three sons. This was the Kasi varma kalai, written by Kambilasan and dedicated to Mahabarata. In the Kathir (Kambidigai) the King's general Nakula Diganay, who is in love with the King's daughter Madinti, is instructed by his mother to learn this art, and he goes to Kambilasan to study. Kambilasan, on finding a friend and disciple in him, teaches him the two branches of the art, kalavedhi and udgedha kalai. Kambilasan in order to identify the points of pressure, compares the places of the body to the places of the sea, the characteristic features of which he describes, and gives special names to the points. In his work he also mentions a few names in the book "Marma Rusam" which he, as a specialist, has used in the practice of the art. Kambilasan in the first portion of his book gives the points for the treatment of diseases, and describes how to use them. Kambilasan, the second part of his work contains the points for the health and the beauty and those for the eye, ear and nose, mouth and tongue. d2c66b5586
