Development started in early 2010 with the goals of reworking the character Falco Lombardi to mechanically play like he did in Melee and increasing the accessibility of the gameplay style, but the project quickly evolved to a full-scale reworking of Brawl. The game's first demo build was released on February 7, 2011, and development continued until December 1, 2015, when the PMDT announced it would cease further development of Project M. The game has received positive comments from reviewers, amassed a player base of over 500,000, surpassed three million downloads, and been played in many professional tournaments.

While the first build of Project M was never intended to be finished, a beta version eventually made it into the hands of players and it didn't take long before some of them realized that it was playable. THe game was released for free and it was at the time the first doonloadable game offered by the organization under its Brawl Developer's Group. Taking a few hints from the Melee Indie Local Play group, the game was being developed to be developed with User interfaces and networking that would be accessible for many casual players.

The original Game Creators were members of the game development community that made the game. They are also the people that made this website. We started off with Project M while we were still in high school and we continued to grow it into a viable community project after graduating and working in the industry.
